Projects: Ice2k.sys

[BACK]

For quite some time now, I've head the pleasure to assist in developing Ice2k.sys. Now you might be wondering, what Ice2k.sys actually is? Well, let's consult the website for this:

" Ice2K.sys is a desktop environment that mimics the appearance and functionality of the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. It's specifically tailored for Linux-based operating systems such as Debian and Devuan, getting users back to the classic Windows era while running on Linux based platforms. With Ice2K.sys, users can enjoy a familiar desktop interface similar to Windows 2000, complete with its iconic taskbar and windowing system. "

Ice2k.sys is basically a desktop environment based on IceWM. Although it's still pretty much in Alpha, 0penrc and I are constantly developing it. This doesn't mean that it's unusable, one can very much daily drive it. The Build on the website is an older build of Ice2k.sys which has to be installed manually. The build published in the Discord Server is a nightly build made by me which offers an installer for Debian-based systems and additional features and bugfixes, such as

  • Being able to create new Files/Folders from the context menu on the desktop
  • A Run Dialogue meant for replacing gmrun
  • Fitting cursors being automatically installed
  • Various fixes ranging from audio-related to the shutdown/logoff system

  • Ice2k.sys is completely Open Source and thus you can play around with it and check if it's malicious or not.

It would be highly appreciated if you joined our Discord and tested Ice2k.sys - It really helps bring development forward! Speaking of bringing the Development forward, these things are coming soon!

  • Further recreation of Windows 2000 applications using a custom graphics toolkit based around Xlib
  • Migration of the codebase to (mostly) C code
  • Migration to fvwm instead of IceWM
